When kids do not have access to electricity, they burn portable fuel (like Sterno here in the U.S.).  The light is low and the fumes are actually toxic.  Kids have black nostrils from breathing in the gas.

Like most parents all over the world, Dewi and Lucas (Al's parents) want him to have opportunities in life.  They know learning English at a young age and getting a good education at a quality school in Jakarta where they live is Al's ticket to having opportunities.

Al is in 1st grade and he likes reading and watching English cartoons when he has access to TV.
